Other stories of the Qur’an, beyond the prophets

The People of the Cave, Dhul-Qarnayn, Luqman, Talut and Jalut, the owners of the garden, the People of the Elephant, the People of the Ditch, Saba, the believer of Pharaoh’s family, and the town of Ya-Sin

The Qur’an tells not only the stories of prophets but also of ordinary people, kings and nations, with lessons of faith, steadfastness, gratitude and ingratitude. Many of them are left unnamed in the Qur’an, as noted.

← Stories of the prophets

The People of the Cave

Young men who took refuge in a cave to save their faith, and whom Allah caused to sleep for centuries.

1

Young men of faith

These young men stood firm for the one Lord against their people’s shirk and sought refuge in the cave, praying: our Lord, grant us mercy.

Qur’an references 18:9-16
All the ayaat (8)
18:9 Al-Kahf

Or dost thou reflect that the Companions of the Cave and of the Inscription were wonders among Our Sign

Behold, the youths betook themselves to the Cave: they said, "Our Lord! bestow on us Mercy from Thyself, and dispose of our affair for us in the right way

Then We draw (a veil) over their ears, for a number of years, in the Cave, (so that they heard not)

Then We roused them, in order to test which of the two parties was best at calculating the term of years they had tarried

18:13 Al-Kahf Key ayah

We relate to thee their story in truth: they were youths who believed in their Lord, and We advanced them in guidance

We gave strength to their hearts: Behold, they stood up and said: "Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and of the earth: never shall we call upon any god other than Him: if we did, we should indeed have uttered an enormity

These our people have taken for worship gods other than Him: why do they not bring forward an authority clear (and convincing) for what they do? Who doth more wrong than such as invent a falsehood against Allah

When ye turn away from them and the things they worship other than Allah, betake yourselves to the Cave: Your Lord will shower His mercies on you and disposes of your affair towards comfort and ease

2

A sleep of centuries

The sun inclined away from them at rising and setting; they seemed awake though asleep, and their dog lay stretched at the entrance. They stayed three hundred years, and nine more.

Qur’an references 18:17-1818:25
All the ayaat (3)
18:17 Al-Kahf

Thou wouldst have seen the sun, when it rose, declining to the right from their Cave, and when it set, turning away from them to the left, while they lay in the open space in the midst of the Cave. Such are among the Signs of Allah: He whom Allah, guides is rightly guided; but he whom Allah leaves to stray,- for him wilt thou find no protector to lead him to the Right Way

Thou wouldst have deemed them awake, whilst they were asleep, and We turned them on their right and on their left sides: their dog stretching forth his two fore-legs on the threshold: if thou hadst come up on to them, thou wouldst have certainly turned back from them in flight, and wouldst certainly have been filled with terror of them

18:25 Al-Kahf Key ayah

So they stayed in their Cave three hundred years, and (some) add nine (more)

3

Waking, and the coin

Waking, they asked each other how long they had slept; they sent one to the city with a silver coin, and so their secret came out, that people might know Allah’s promise is true and the Hour is certain.

Qur’an references 18:19-21
All the ayaat (3)
18:19 Al-Kahf

Such (being their state), we raised them up (from sleep), that they might question each other. Said one of them, "How long have ye stayed (here)?" They said, "We have stayed (perhaps) a day, or part of a day." (At length) they (all) said, "Allah (alone) knows best how long ye have stayed here.... Now send ye then one of you with this money of yours to the town: let him find out which is the best food (to be had) and bring some to you, that (ye may) satisfy your hunger therewith: And let him behave with care and courtesy, and let him not inform any one about you

For if they should come upon you, they would stone you or force you to return to their cult, and in that case ye would never attain prosperity

18:21 Al-Kahf Key ayah

Thus did We make their case known to the people, that they might know that the promise of Allah is true, and that there can be no doubt about the Hour of Judgment. Behold, they dispute among themselves as to their affair. (Some) said, "Construct a building over them": Their Lord knows best about them: those who prevailed over their affair said, "Let us surely build a place of worship over them

4

The dispute about their number

People disputed their number: three, five or seven; the Qur’an says: my Lord knows their number best; do not argue much about them. With it the lesson: never say “I will do it tomorrow” without “if Allah wills”.

Qur’an references 18:22-26
All the ayaat (5)
18:22 Al-Kahf Key ayah

(Some) say they were three, the dog being the fourth among them; (others) say they were five, the dog being the sixth,- doubtfully guessing at the unknown; (yet others) say they were seven, the dog being the eighth. Say thou: "My Lord knoweth best their number; It is but few that know their (real case)." Enter not, therefore, into controversies concerning them, except on a matter that is clear, nor consult any of them about (the affair of) the Sleepers

Nor say of anything, "I shall be sure to do so and so tomorrow

Without adding, "So please Allah!" and call thy Lord to mind when thou forgettest, and say, "I hope that my Lord will guide me ever closer (even) than this to the right road

So they stayed in their Cave three hundred years, and (some) add nine (more)

Say: "Allah knows best how long they stayed: with Him is (the knowledge of) the secrets of the heavens and the earth: how clearly He sees, how finely He hears (everything)! They have no protector other than Him; nor does He share His Command with any person whatsoever

A just king to whom Allah gave power in the land and the means to everything. The Qur’an does not identify him.

1

The journey west

He reached the setting of the sun, finding it setting in a murky spring; of the people there he said: the wrongdoer will be punished, and whoever believes and does good will have a fine reward.

Qur’an references 18:83-88
All the ayaat (6)
18:83 Al-Kahf

They ask thee concerning Zul-qarnain. Say, "I will rehearse to you something of his story

Verily We established his power on earth, and We gave him the ways and the means to all ends

18:85 Al-Kahf

One (such) way he followed

18:86 Al-Kahf Key ayah

Until, when he reached the setting of the sun, he found it set in a spring of murky water: Near it he found a People: We said: "O Zul-qarnain! (thou hast authority,) either to punish them, or to treat them with kindness

He said: "Whoever doth wrong, him shall we punish; then shall he be sent back to his Lord; and He will punish him with a punishment unheard-of (before)

But whoever believes, and works righteousness,- he shall have a goodly reward, and easy will be his task as We order it by our Command

2

The journey east

Then he reached the rising of the sun, among a people with no shelter from it.

Qur’an references 18:89-91
All the ayaat (3)
18:89 Al-Kahf

Then followed he (another) way

18:90 Al-Kahf Key ayah

Until, when he came to the rising of the sun, he found it rising on a people for whom We had provided no covering protection against the sun

(He left them) as they were: We completely understood what was before him

3

The barrier against Gog and Magog

A people between two mountains complained of the corruption of Gog and Magog; he took no payment, built a strong barrier of iron sheets and molten copper, and said: this is a mercy from my Lord; when His promise comes He will level it.

Qur’an references 18:92-98
All the ayaat (7)
18:92 Al-Kahf

Then followed he (another) way

Until, when he reached (a tract) between two mountains, he found, beneath them, a people who scarcely understood a word

18:94 Al-Kahf Key ayah

They said: "O Zul-qarnain! the Gog and Magog (People) do great mischief on earth: shall we then render thee tribute in order that thou mightest erect a barrier between us and them

He said: "(The power) in which my Lord has established me is better (than tribute): Help me therefore with strength (and labour): I will erect a strong barrier between you and them

Bring me blocks of iron." At length, when he had filled up the space between the two steep mountain-sides, He said, "Blow (with your bellows)" Then, when he had made it (red) as fire, he said: "Bring me, that I may pour over it, molten lead

Thus were they made powerless to scale it or to dig through it

He said: "This is a mercy from my Lord: But when the promise of my Lord comes to pass, He will make it into dust; and the promise of my Lord is true

Luqman’s advice

Luqman, a wise man to whom Allah gave wisdom; the Qur’an records his advice to his son.

1

Wisdom, and no shirk

Allah gave Luqman wisdom, that he be grateful. His first advice: my son, do not associate anything with Allah; shirk is a tremendous wrong.

Qur’an references 31:12-13
All the ayaat (2)
31:12 Luqman

we bestowed (in the past) Wisdom on Luqman: "Show (thy) gratitude to Allah." Any who is (so) grateful does so to the profit of his own soul: but if any is ungrateful, verily Allah is free of all wants, Worthy of all praise

31:13 Luqman Key ayah

Behold, Luqman said to his son by way of instruction: "O my son! join not in worship (others) with Allah: for false worship is indeed the highest wrong-doing

2

Parents

(Within it, Allah’s own counsel:) his mother bore him in weakness upon weakness; be grateful to Me and to your parents; and if they press you to shirk, do not obey them, yet keep them company kindly in this world.

Qur’an references 31:14-15
All the ayaat (2)
31:14 Luqman Key ayah

And We have enjoined on man (to be good) to his parents: in travail upon travail did his mother bear him, and in years twain was his weaning: (hear the command), "Show gratitude to Me and to thy parents: to Me is (thy final) Goal

But if they strive to make thee join in worship with Me things of which thou hast no knowledge, obey them not; yet bear them company in this life with justice (and consideration), and follow the way of those who turn to me (in love): in the end the return of you all is to Me, and I will tell you the truth (and meaning) of all that ye did

3

The mustard seed, prayer and patience

My son, even a deed the weight of a mustard seed, in a rock or in the heavens or earth, Allah will bring it forth. Establish prayer, enjoin good, forbid evil, and be patient in what befalls you.

Qur’an references 31:16-17
All the ayaat (2)
31:16 Luqman Key ayah

O my son!" (said Luqman), "If there be (but) the weight of a mustard-seed and it were (hidden) in a rock, or (anywhere) in the heavens or on earth, Allah will bring it forth: for Allah understands the finest mysteries, (and) is well-acquainted (with them)

O my son! establish regular prayer, enjoin what is just, and forbid what is wrong: and bear with patient constancy whatever betide thee; for this is firmness (of purpose) in (the conduct of) affairs

4

Humility and manners of speech

Do not turn your cheek from people, do not walk proudly on the earth, be moderate in your pace and lower your voice; the harshest of voices is the braying of the donkey.

Qur’an references 31:18-19
All the ayaat (2)
31:18 Luqman Key ayah

And swell not thy cheek (for pride) at men, nor walk in insolence through the earth; for Allah loveth not any arrogant boaster

And be moderate in thy pace, and lower thy voice; for the harshest of sounds without doubt is the braying of the ass

Talut and Jalut

After Musa, the Israelites asked for a king; a story of leadership, testing, and the few overcoming the many.

1

The demand for a king, and Talut

They asked their prophet for a king; when Allah appointed Talut they objected that he was not wealthy. The prophet said: Allah has given him more knowledge and stature. (The Qur’an does not name that prophet.)

Qur’an references 2:246-247
All the ayaat (2)
2:246 Al-Baqarah

Hast thou not Turned thy vision to the Chiefs of the Children of Israel after (the time of) Moses? they said to a prophet (That was) among them: "Appoint for us a king, that we May fight in the cause of Allah." He said: "Is it not possible, if ye were commanded to fight, that that ye will not fight?" They said: "How could we refuse to fight in the cause of Allah, seeing that we were turned out of our homes and our families?" but when they were commanded to fight, they turned back, except a small band among them. But Allah Has full knowledge of those who do wrong

2:247 Al-Baqarah Key ayah

Their Prophet said to them: "Allah hath appointed Talut as king over you." They said: "How can he exercise authority over us when we are better fitted than he to exercise authority, and he is not even gifted, with wealth in abundance?" He said: "Allah hath Chosen him above you, and hath gifted him abundantly with knowledge and bodily prowess: Allah Granteth His authority to whom He pleaseth. Allah careth for all, and He knoweth all things

2

The sign of the Ark

The sign of Talut’s kingship was the Ark containing tranquillity and relics of the family of Musa and Harun, carried by angels.

Qur’an references 2:248
All the ayaat (1)
2:248 Al-Baqarah Key ayah

And (further) their Prophet said to them: "A Sign of his authority is that there shall come to you the Ark of the covenant, with (an assurance) therein of security from your Lord, and the relics left by the family of Moses and the family of Aaron, carried by angels. In this is a symbol for you if ye indeed have faith

3

The test of the river

Talut said: you will be tested by a river; whoever drinks from it is not with me, except a single scoop. All but a few drank; those who remained said: how often a small band has overcome a large one by Allah’s leave.

Qur’an references 2:249
All the ayaat (1)
2:249 Al-Baqarah Key ayah

When Talut set forth with the armies, he said: "Allah will test you at the stream: if any drinks of its water, He goes not with my army: Only those who taste not of it go with me: A mere sip out of the hand is excused." but they all drank of it, except a few. When they crossed the river,- He and the faithful ones with him,- they said: "This day We cannot cope with Goliath and his forces." but those who were convinced that they must meet Allah, said: "How oft, by Allah's will, Hath a small force vanquished a big one? Allah is with those who steadfastly persevere

4

Victory, and Dawud

They prayed for patience and firm feet, defeated the enemy by Allah’s leave, and Dawud killed Jalut.

Qur’an references 2:250-251
All the ayaat (2)
2:250 Al-Baqarah

When they advanced to meet Goliath and his forces, they prayed: "Our Lord! Pour out constancy on us and make our steps firm: Help us against those that reject faith

2:251 Al-Baqarah Key ayah

By Allah's will they routed them; and David slew Goliath; and Allah gave him power and wisdom and taught him whatever (else) He willed. And did not Allah Check one set of people by means of another, the earth would indeed be full of mischief: But Allah is full of bounty to all the worlds

All the ayaat (9)
68:17 Al-Qalam Key ayah

Verily We have tried them as We tried the People of the Garden, when they resolved to gather the fruits of the (garden) in the morning

68:18 Al-Qalam

But made no reservation, ("If it be Allah's Will)

Then there came on the (garden) a visitation from thy Lord, (which swept away) all around, while they were asleep

So the (garden) became, by the morning, like a dark and desolate spot, (whose fruit had been gathered)

As the morning broke, they called out, one to another

Go ye to your tilth (betimes) in the morning, if ye would gather the fruits

So they departed, conversing in secret low tones, (saying)

Let not a single indigent person break in upon you into the (garden) this day

And they opened the morning, strong in an (unjust) resolve

2

Regret and repentance

Seeing it they said: we have lost our way; no, we have been deprived; then they confessed: we were wrongdoers, and hoped their Lord would give them better. “Such is the punishment, and that of the Hereafter is greater.”

Qur’an references 68:26-33
All the ayaat (8)

But when they saw the (garden), they said: "We have surely lost our way

Indeed we are shut out (of the fruits of our labour)

Said one of them, more just (than the rest): "Did I not say to you, 'Why not glorify (Allah)

68:29 Al-Qalam Key ayah

Then they turned, one against another, in reproach

They said: "Alas for us! We have indeed transgressed

It may be that our Lord will give us in exchange a better (garden) than this: for we do turn to Him (in repentance)

Such is the Punishment (in this life); but greater is the Punishment in the Hereafter,- if only they knew

Behold! they sat over against the (fire)

And they witnessed (all) that they were doing against the Believers

85:8 Al-Buruj Key ayah

And they ill-treated them for no other reason than that they believed in Allah, Exalted in Power, Worthy of all Praise

Him to Whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth! And Allah is Witness to all things

Those who persecute (or draw into temptation) the Believers, men and women, and do not turn in repentance, will have the Penalty of Hell: They will have the Penalty of the Burning Fire

Saba and the dam

A prosperous people with two gardens, whose ingratitude brought it all to ruin.

1

Two gardens and the flood of the dam

They had gardens on the right and left: “eat of your Lord’s provision and give thanks: a good land and a forgiving Lord”; they turned away, so the flood of the dam came and their gardens turned to bitter fruit and thorns.

Qur’an references 34:15-17
All the ayaat (3)
34:15 Saba

There was, for Saba, aforetime, a Sign in their home-land - two Gardens to the right and to the left. "Eat of the Sustenance (provided) by your Lord, and be grateful to Him: a territory fair and happy, and a Lord Oft-Forgiving

34:16 Saba Key ayah

But they turned away (from Allah), and We sent against them the Flood (released) from the dams, and We converted their two garden (rows) into "gardens" producing bitter fruit, and tamarisks, and some few (stunted) Lote-trees

That was the Requital We gave them because they ungratefully rejected Faith: and never do We give (such) requital except to such as are ungrateful rejecters

2

The prayer for longer journeys

Their towns were linked by safe journeys, yet they said: our Lord, lengthen the stages of our travels; so they were made into tales and scattered.

Qur’an references 34:18-19
All the ayaat (2)
34:18 Saba

Between them and the Cities on which We had poured our blessings, We had placed Cities in prominent positions, and between them We had appointed stages of journey in due proportion: "Travel therein, secure, by night and by day

34:19 Saba Key ayah

But they said: "Our Lord! Place longer distances between our journey-stages": but they wronged themselves (therein). At length We made them as a tale (that is told), and We dispersed them all in scattered fragments. Verily in this are Signs for every (soul that is) patiently constant and grateful

The believer from Pharaoh’s family

A man of Pharaoh’s court who concealed his faith, and stood up in defence of Musa.

1

Defending Musa

When Pharaoh wanted to kill Musa, he said: will you kill a man for saying “my Lord is Allah”?

Qur’an references 40:28-29
All the ayaat (2)
40:28 Ghafir Key ayah

A believer, a man from among the people of Pharaoh, who had concealed his faith, said: "Will ye slay a man because he says, 'My Lord is Allah'?- when he has indeed come to you with Clear (Signs) from your Lord? and if he be a liar, on him is (the sin of) his lie: but, if he is telling the Truth, then will fall on you something of the (calamity) of which he warns you: Truly Allah guides not one who transgresses and lies

O my People! Yours is the dominion this day: Ye have the upper hand in the land: but who will help us from the Punishment of Allah, should it befall us?" Pharaoh said: "I but point out to you that which I see (myself); Nor do I guide you but to the Path of Right

2

His counsel to the people

He warned of the fate of earlier nations, called them to guidance, and finally said: I entrust my affair to Allah.

Qur’an references 40:30-3540:38-44
All the ayaat (13)
40:30 Ghafir

Then said the man who believed: "O my people! Truly I do fear for you something like the Day (of disaster) of the Confederates (in sin)

Something like the fate of the People of Noah, the 'Ad, and the Thamud, and those who came after them: but Allah never wishes injustice to his Servants

And O my people! I fear for you a Day when there will be Mutual calling (and wailing)

A Day when ye shall turn your backs and flee: No defender shall ye have from Allah: Any whom Allah leaves to stray, there is none to guide

And to you there came Joseph in times gone by, with Clear Signs, but ye ceased not to doubt of the (Mission) for which he had come: At length, when he died, ye said: 'No messenger will Allah send after him.' thus doth Allah leave to stray such as transgress and live in doubt

(Such) as dispute about the Signs of Allah, without any authority that hath reached them, grievous and odious (is such conduct) in the sight of Allah and of the Believers. Thus doth Allah, seal up every heart - of arrogant and obstinate Transgressors

The man who believed said further: "O my people! Follow me: I will lead you to the Path of Right

O my people! This life of the present is nothing but (temporary) convenience: It is the Hereafter that is the Home that will last

He that works evil will not be requited but by the like thereof: and he that works a righteous deed - whether man or woman - and is a Believer- such will enter the Garden (of Bliss): Therein will they have abundance without measure

And O my people! How (strange) it is for me to call you to Salvation while ye call me to the Fire

Ye do call upon me to blaspheme against Allah, and to join with Him partners of whom I have no knowledge; and I call you to the Exalted in Power, Who forgives again and again

Without doubt ye do call me to one who is not fit to be called to, whether in this world, or in the Hereafter; our return will be to Allah; and the Transgressors will be Companions of the Fire

40:44 Ghafir Key ayah

Soon will ye remember what I say to you (now), My (own) affair I commit to Allah: for Allah (ever) watches over His Servants

3

Allah’s protection

Allah protected him from the evil of their plots, and a terrible punishment encompassed Pharaoh’s people.

Qur’an references 40:45
All the ayaat (1)
40:45 Ghafir Key ayah

Then Allah saved him from (every) ill that they plotted (against him), but the burnt of the Penalty encompassed on all sides the People of Pharaoh

The townspeople and the man who came running

A town in Surah Ya-Sin that denied three messengers, and a man who came running from the far end of the city to support them.

1

Three messengers

Two messengers were sent, then strengthened with a third; the people called them a bad omen and threatened to stone them.

Qur’an references 36:13-19
All the ayaat (7)
36:13 Ya-Sin

Set forth to them, by way of a parable, the (story of) the Companions of the City. Behold!, there came messengers to it

36:14 Ya-Sin Key ayah

When We (first) sent to them two messengers, they rejected them: But We strengthened them with a third: they said, "Truly, we have been sent on a mission to you

The (people) said: "Ye are only men like ourselves; and (Allah) Most Gracious sends no sort of revelation: ye do nothing but lie

They said: "Our Lord doth know that we have been sent on a mission to you

And our duty is only to proclaim the clear Message

The (people) said: "for us, we augur an evil omen from you: if ye desist not, we will certainly stone you. And a grievous punishment indeed will be inflicted on you by us

They said: "Your evil omens are with yourselves: (deem ye this an evil omen). If ye are admonished? Nay, but ye are a people transgressing all bounds

2

The man who came running

A man came running from the far end of the city: O my people, follow the messengers; they ask no reward of you and are rightly guided.

Qur’an references 36:20-25
All the ayaat (6)
36:20 Ya-Sin Key ayah

Then there came running, from the farthest part of the City, a man, saying, "O my people! Obey the messengers

Obey those who ask no reward of you (for themselves), and who have themselves received Guidance

It would not be reasonable in me if I did not serve Him Who created me, and to Whom ye shall (all) be brought back

Shall I take (other) gods besides Him? If (Allah) Most Gracious should intend some adversity for me, of no use whatever will be their intercession for me, nor can they deliver me

I would indeed, if I were to do so, be in manifest Error

For me, I have faith in the Lord of you (all): listen, then, to me

3

Paradise for him; the end of the people

(After his death) he was told: enter Paradise; he said: if only my people knew how my Lord has forgiven me. The people were silenced by a single blast.

Qur’an references 36:26-29
All the ayaat (4)
36:26 Ya-Sin Key ayah

It was said: "Enter thou the Garden." He said: "Ah me! Would that my People knew (what I know)

For that my Lord has granted me Forgiveness and has enrolled me among those held in honour

And We sent not down against his People, after him, any hosts from heaven, nor was it needful for Us so to do

It was no more than a single mighty Blast, and behold! they were (like ashes) quenched and silent
