Disbelief and hypocrisyThe hypocrite saw the light of faith for a moment; then the light went and he was left in darkness.
Their similitude is that of a man who kindled a fire; when it lighted all around him, Allah took away their light and left them in utter darkness. So they could not see (17) Deaf, dumb, and blind, they will not return (to the path) (18)
Disbelief and hypocrisyA second parable of the hypocrites: revelation is a mercy like rain, but, afraid of its thunder (its warnings), they thrust their fingers into their ears. Two parables are given together for the hypocrites: fire and water.
Or (another similitude) is that of a rain-laden cloud from the sky: In it are zones of darkness, and thunder and lightning: They press their fingers in their ears to keep out the stunning thunder-clap, the while they are in terror of death. But Allah is ever round the rejecters of Faith (19) The lightning all but snatches away their sight; every time the light (Helps) them, they walk therein, and when the darkness grows on them, they stand still. And if Allah willed, He could take away their faculty of hearing and seeing; for Allah hath power over all things (20)
Disbelief and hypocrisyAnimals hear only the noise, not the meaning; disbelievers too hear the call but not the message.
The parable of those who reject Faith is as if one were to shout Like a goat-herd, to things that listen to nothing but calls and cries: Deaf, dumb, and blind, they are void of wisdom
Disbelief and hypocrisyOne given Allah’s signs who clung to the world: a dog pants whatever you do, and his greed stays whatever happens.
Relate to them the story of the man to whom We sent Our signs, but he passed them by: so Satan followed him up, and he went astray (175) If it had been Our will, We should have elevated him with Our signs; but he inclined to the earth, and followed his own vain desires. His similitude is that of a dog: if you attack him, he lolls out his tongue, or if you leave him alone, he (still) lolls out his tongue. That is the similitude of those who reject Our signs; So relate the story; perchance they may reflect (176)
Disbelief and hypocrisyThe deeds of disbelievers are like ashes blown away by a fierce wind; nothing is left in their hands.
The parable of those who reject their Lord is that their works are as ashes, on which the wind blows furiously on a tempestuous day: No power have they over aught that they have earned: that is the straying far, far (from the goal)
Disbelief and hypocrisyTwo parables: a mirage that turns out to be nothing, and darkness upon darkness: the sea, wave upon wave, clouds above.
But the Unbelievers,- their deeds are like a mirage in sandy deserts, which the man parched with thirst mistakes for water; until when he comes up to it, he finds it to be nothing: But he finds Allah (ever) with him, and Allah will pay him his account: and Allah is swift in taking account (39) Or (the Unbelievers' state) is like the depths of darkness in a vast deep ocean, overwhelmed with billow topped by billow, topped by (dark) clouds: depths of darkness, one above another: if a man stretches out his hands, he can hardly see it! for any to whom Allah giveth not light, there is no light (40)
Disbelief and hypocrisyProtectors other than Allah are like a spider’s web: a house to look at, but in reality the weakest of all.
The parable of those who take protectors other than Allah is that of the spider, who builds (to itself) a house; but truly the flimsiest of houses is the spider's house;- if they but knew
Disbelief and hypocrisyThose given the Torah who did not act on it: they carry the weight of books without benefiting from them.
The similitude of those who were charged with the (obligations of the) Mosaic Law, but who subsequently failed in those (obligations), is that of a donkey which carries huge tomes (but understands them not). Evil is the similitude of people who falsify the Signs of Allah: and Allah guides not people who do wrong
Disbelief and hypocrisyAll the false gods together could not create a fly; and if a fly snatched something from them, they could not take it back.
O men! Here is a parable set forth! listen to it! Those on whom, besides Allah, ye call, cannot create (even) a fly, if they all met together for the purpose! and if the fly should snatch away anything from them, they would have no power to release it from the fly. Feeble are those who petition and those whom they petition
Disbelief and hypocrisyOne who associates partners with Allah is like one who falls from the sky, snatched by birds or flung far by the wind.
Being true in faith to Allah, and never assigning partners to Him: if anyone assigns partners to Allah, is as if he had fallen from heaven and been snatched up by birds, or the wind had swooped (like a bird on its prey) and thrown him into a far-distant place
Disbelief and hypocrisyThe believer is one who was dead and was given life and light; the disbeliever is in darkness he cannot leave.
Can he who was dead, to whom We gave life, and a light whereby he can walk amongst men, be like him who is in the depths of darkness, from which he can never come out? Thus to those without faith their own deeds seem pleasing
12. The blind and deaf, and the seeing and hearing11:24 Hud
Disbelief and hypocrisyThe parable of the believer and the disbeliever: can the blind and deaf be equal to one who sees and hears?
These two kinds (of men) may be compared to the blind and deaf, and those who can see and hear well. Are they equal when compared? Will ye not then take heed
Disbelief and hypocrisyThe hypocrites’ promise to the Jews is like Shaytan: first he urges disbelief, then he disowns.
(Their allies deceived them), like the Evil One, when he says to man, "Deny Allah": but when (man) denies Allah, (the Evil One) says, "I am free of thee: I do fear Allah, the Lord of the Worlds
Disbelief and hypocrisyBeing a prophet’s wife was of no avail: salvation depends on faith, not on kinship.
Allah sets forth, for an example to the Unbelievers, the wife of Noah and the wife of Lut: they were (respectively) under two of our righteous servants, but they were false to their (husbands), and they profited nothing before Allah on their account, but were told: "Enter ye the Fire along with (others) that enter
Faith, truth and lightThe good word (tawhid) is like a tree with firm roots, branches in the sky, giving fruit in every season; the bad word is a tree uprooted.
Seest thou not how Allah sets forth a parable? - A goodly word like a goodly tree, whose root is firmly fixed, and its branches (reach) to the heavens,- of its Lord. So Allah sets forth parables for men, in order that they may receive admonition (24) It brings forth its fruit at all times, by the leave of its Lord. So Allah sets forth parables for men, in order that they may receive admonition (25) And the parable of an evil Word is that of an evil tree: It is torn up by the root from the surface of the earth: it has no stability (26)
Faith, truth and lightThe parable of Allah’s light: a lamp in a niche, the lamp in glass, lit from a blessed olive tree. «Light upon light».
Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The Parable of His Light is as if there were a Niche and within it a Lamp: the Lamp enclosed in Glass: the glass as it were a brilliant star: Lit from a blessed Tree, an Olive, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil is well-nigh luminous, though fire scarce touched it: Light upon Light! Allah doth guide whom He will to His Light: Allah doth set forth Parables for men: and Allah doth know all things
Faith, truth and lightA parable of truth and falsehood: the foam (falsehood) floats on top but vanishes, and what benefits people (truth) remains in the earth.
He sends down water from the skies, and the channels flow, each according to its measure: But the torrent bears away to foam that mounts up to the surface. Even so, from that (ore) which they heat in the fire, to make ornaments or utensils therewith, there is a scum likewise. Thus doth Allah (by parables) show forth Truth and Vanity. For the scum disappears like forth cast out; while that which is for the good of mankind remains on the earth. Thus doth Allah set forth parables
Faith, truth and lightA parable of the Companions: a crop puts out its shoot, grows strong and stands on its stem, delighting the sowers.
Muhammad is the messenger of Allah; and those who are with him are strong against Unbelievers, (but) compassionate amongst each other. Thou wilt see them bow and prostrate themselves (in prayer), seeking Grace from Allah and (His) Good Pleasure. On their faces are their marks, (being) the traces of their prostration. This is their similitude in the Taurat; and their similitude in the Gospel is: like a seed which sends forth its blade, then makes it strong; it then becomes thick, and it stands on its own stem, (filling) the sowers with wonder and delight. As a result, it fills the Unbelievers with rage at them. Allah has promised those among them who believe and do righteous deeds forgiveness, and a great Reward
Faith, truth and lightAn example for believers: the wife of the worst tyrant held to her faith, and Maryam was chaste and believed.
And Allah sets forth, as an example to those who believe the wife of Pharaoh: Behold she said: "O my Lord! Build for me, in nearness to Thee, a mansion in the Garden, and save me from Pharaoh and his doings, and save me from those that do wrong (11) And Mary the daughter of 'Imran, who guarded her chastity; and We breathed into (her body) of Our spirit; and she testified to the truth of the words of her Lord and of His Revelations, and was one of the devout (servants) (12)
Spending in Allah’s causeA parable of spending for Allah: one grain grows seven ears, a hundred grains in each, seven hundredfold, and Allah multiplies further for whom He wills.
The parable of those who spend their substance in the way of Allah is that of a grain of corn: it groweth seven ears, and each ear Hath a hundred grains. Allah giveth manifold increase to whom He pleaseth: And Allah careth for all and He knoweth all things
Spending in Allah’s causeCharity spoiled by reminders or showing off: a little soil on a rock, washed away by the rain.
O ye who believe! cancel not your charity by reminders of your generosity or by injury,- like those who spend their substance to be seen of men, but believe neither in Allah nor in the Last Day. They are in parable like a hard, barren rock, on which is a little soil: on it falls heavy rain, which leaves it (Just) a bare stone. They will be able to do nothing with aught they have earned. And Allah guideth not those who reject faith
Spending in Allah’s causeThe reward of sincere spending: a garden on high ground that doubles its fruit in heavy rain, and even a drizzle suffices.
And the likeness of those who spend their substance, seeking to please Allah and to strengthen their souls, is as a garden, high and fertile: heavy rain falls on it but makes it yield a double increase of harvest, and if it receives not Heavy rain, light moisture sufficeth it. Allah seeth well whatever ye do
Spending in Allah’s causeOne whose deeds are lost: just when most needed, in old age with weak children, the garden is burnt by a fiery whirlwind.
Does any of you wish that he should have a garden with date-palms and vines and streams flowing underneath, and all kinds of fruit, while he is stricken with old age, and his children are not strong (enough to look after themselves)- that it should be caught in a whirlwind, with fire therein, and be burnt up? Thus doth Allah make clear to you (His) Signs; that ye may consider
Spending in Allah’s causeThe spending of disbelievers: an icy wind that destroys the crop of a people who wronged themselves.
What they spend in the life of this (material) world May be likened to a wind which brings a nipping frost: It strikes and destroys the harvest of men who have wronged their own souls: it is not Allah that hath wronged them, but they wrong themselves
The life of this worldThe splendour of this world: crops flourishing with rain, then suddenly cut down as if nothing had been there yesterday.
The likeness of the life of the present is as the rain which We send down from the skies: by its mingling arises the produce of the earth- which provides food for men and animals: (It grows) till the earth is clad with its golden ornaments and is decked out (in beauty): the people to whom it belongs think they have all powers of disposal over it: There reaches it Our command by night or by day, and We make it like a harvest clean-mown, as if it had not flourished only the day before! thus do We explain the Signs in detail for those who reflect
The life of this worldThe same parable, ending in chaff scattered by the winds.
Set forth to them the similitude of the life of this world: It is like the rain which we send down from the skies: the earth's vegetation absorbs it, but soon it becomes dry stubble, which the winds do scatter: it is (only) Allah who prevails over all things
The life of this worldThis world is play, amusement, adornment, boasting and rivalry in wealth and children: a crop that delights at first, then yellows and crumbles.
Know ye (all), that the life of this world is but play and amusement, pomp and mutual boasting and multiplying, (in rivalry) among yourselves, riches and children. Here is a similitude: How rain and the growth which it brings forth, delight (the hearts of) the tillers; soon it withers; thou wilt see it grow yellow; then it becomes dry and crumbles away. But in the Hereafter is a Penalty severe (for the devotees of wrong). And Forgiveness from Allah and (His) Good Pleasure (for the devotees of Allah). And what is the life of this world, but goods and chattels of deception

Set forth to them the parable of two men: for one of them We provided two gardens of grape-vines and surrounded them with date palms; in between the two We placed corn-fields (32) Each of those gardens brought forth its produce, and failed not in the least therein: in the midst of them We caused a river to flow (33) (Abundant) was the produce this man had: he said to his companion, in the course of a mutual argument: "more wealth have I than you, and more honour and power in (my following of) men (34) He went into his garden in a state (of mind) unjust to his soul: He said, "I deem not that this will ever perish (35) Nor do I deem that the Hour (of Judgment) will (ever) come: Even if I am brought back to my Lord, I shall surely find (there) something better in exchange (36) So his fruits (and enjoyment) were encompassed (with ruin), and he remained twisting and turning his hands over what he had spent on his property, which had (now) tumbled to pieces to its very foundations, and he could only say, "Woe is me! Would I had never ascribed partners to my Lord and Cherisher (42)
The life of this worldA town in safety and plenty; when it was ungrateful it was made to wear the garment of hunger and fear.

Allah sets forth a Parable: a city enjoying security and quiet, abundantly supplied with sustenance from every place: Yet was it ungrateful for the favours of Allah: so Allah made it taste of hunger and terror (in extremes) (closing in on it) like a garment (from every side), because of the (evil) which (its people) wrought

Verily We have tried them as We tried the People of the Garden, when they resolved to gather the fruits of the (garden) in the morning (17) But made no reservation, ("If it be Allah's Will) (18) Then there came on the (garden) a visitation from thy Lord, (which swept away) all around, while they were asleep (19) So the (garden) became, by the morning, like a dark and desolate spot, (whose fruit had been gathered) (20) But when they saw the (garden), they said: "We have surely lost our way (26) Indeed we are shut out (of the fruits of our labour) (27)

Set forth to them, by way of a parable, the (story of) the Companions of the City. Behold!, there came messengers to it (13) When We (first) sent to them two messengers, they rejected them: But We strengthened them with a third: they said, "Truly, we have been sent on a mission to you (14) Then there came running, from the farthest part of the City, a man, saying, "O my people! (By no means;) praise be to Allah. But most of them understand not
33. Two men: the mute and the one who commands justice16:76 An-Nahl
Arguments for tawhidOne is mute, a burden on his master, bringing no good; the other commands justice and is on a straight path.
Allah sets forth (another) Parable of two men: one of them dumb, with no power of any sort; a wearisome burden is he to his master; whichever way be directs him, he brings no good: is such a man equal with one who commands Justice, and is on a Straight Way
Arguments for tawhidDo you make your slaves equal partners in your wealth? Then how do you ascribe partners to Allah?
He does propound to you a similitude from your own (experience): do ye have partners among those whom your right hands possess, to share as equals in the wealth We have bestowed on you? Do ye fear them as ye fear each other? Thus do we explain the Signs in detail to a people that understand
Arguments for tawhidA slave of several quarrelling masters is not equal to a slave of one master: the polytheist and the monotheist.
Allah puts forth a Parable a man belonging to many partners at variance with each other, and a man belonging entirely to one master: are those two equal in comparison? Praise be to Allah! but most of them have no knowledge
Arguments for tawhidAllah is not shy to give a small example; believers know it is the truth, and the defiant are led astray by it.
Allah disdains not to use the similitude of things, lowest as well as highest. Those who believe know that it is truth from their Lord; but those who reject Faith say: "What means Allah by this similitude?" By it He causes many to stray, and many He leads into the right path; but He causes not to stray, except those who forsake (the path)
ParadiseRivers flowing beneath it, its fruit and shade everlasting.
The parable of the Garden which the righteous are promised!- beneath it flow rivers: perpetual is the enjoyment thereof and the shade therein: such is the end of the Righteous; and the end of Unbelievers in the Fire
ParadiseWater that never stales, milk whose taste never changes, delicious wine and pure honey.
(Here is) a Parable of the Garden which the righteous are promised: in it are rivers of water incorruptible; rivers of milk of which the taste never changes; rivers of wine, a joy to those who drink; and rivers of honey pure and clear. In it there are for them all kinds of fruits; and Grace from their Lord. (Can those in such Bliss) be compared to such as shall dwell for ever in the Fire, and be given, to drink, boiling water, so that it cuts up their bowels (to pieces)
OthersIf being born without a father were proof of divinity, Adam was created without father or mother.
The similitude of Jesus before Allah is as that of Adam; He created him from dust, then said to him: "Be". And he was
OthersHad the Qur’an been sent down on a mountain it would have humbled itself and split apart in awe of Allah; why then are human hearts hard?
Had We sent down this Qur'an on a mountain, verily, thou wouldst have seen it humble itself and cleave asunder for fear of Allah. Such are the similitudes which We propound to men, that they may reflect
OthersA man held up a decayed bone and asked who could give it life, forgetting his own creation.
And he makes comparisons for Us, and forgets his own (origin and) Creation: He says, "Who can give life to (dry) bones and decomposed ones (at that)
