Rare and powerful words of the Qur’an, and words of that time and place

66 words with 75 ayaat: intensive forms, words used only once, words that sound like their meaning, and words drawn from seventh-century Arabian life.

Rare, intensive and onomatopoeic words in the Qur'an, and words from 7th-century Arabian life.

Part one

Rare and powerful words

Like ʿujāb: intensive forms

Intensity in the shape of the word

The Arabs intensified meaning by changing a word’s shape: «ṭawīl» (tall), «ṭuwāl» (very tall), «ṭuwwāl» (extremely tall). So «ʿajīb» is strange and «ʿujāb» extremely strange. This is the word Quraysh used on hearing the message of tawhid.

Extremely strange

Stronger than «ʿajīb». Quraysh’s reaction: has he made the gods into one?

38:5 Sad

Has he made the gods (all) into one Allah? Truly this is a wonderful thing

A tremendous (plot)

«kabīr» → «kubār» → «kubbār»: the doubled form is the strongest. The plot of Nuh’s people.

71:22 Nuh

And they have devised a tremendous Plot

Wealth heaped in layers

90:6 Al-Balad

He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance

Always anxious, panicking, withholding

The pattern «faʿūl» shows habit and frequency: the trait appears in man again and again.

70:19 Al-Ma'arij

Truly man was created very impatient

And niggardly when good reaches him

Extremely unjust, extremely ungrateful

And He giveth you of all that ye ask for. But if ye count the favours of Allah, never will ye be able to number them. Verily, man is given up to injustice and ingratitude

Part two

Words of that time and place

Seventh-century Arabian life: the desert, camels, dates, caravan trade and pre-Islamic customs.

Dates: the smallest measures

The Arabs lived on dates, so the Qur’an names parts of the date stone for “the least amount”.

The thread in the groove of a date stone

They will not be wronged even a thread (4:49, 4:77, 17:71).

4:49 An-Nisa

Hast thou not turned Thy vision to those who claim sanctity for themselves? Nay-but Allah Doth sanctify whom He pleaseth. But never will they fail to receive justice in the least little thing

The tiny dent on the back of a date stone

They would not give people even a speck (4:53, 4:124).

4:53 An-Nisa

Have they a share in dominion or power? Behold, they give not a farthing to their fellow-men

The thin skin wrapped around a date stone

They do not own even the skin of a date stone.

35:13 Fatir

He merges Night into Day, and he merges Day into Night, and he has subjected the sun and the moon (to his Law): each one runs its course for a term appointed. Such is Allah your Lord: to Him belongs all Dominion. And those whom ye invoke besides Him have not the least power

Camels: the wealth of Arabia

Ten-month pregnant she-camels

The most precious possession of the Arabs; in the terror of the Day even they will be abandoned.

81:4 At-Takwir

Camels

The listeners are first invited to look at the animal right in front of them.

88:17 Al-Ghashiyah

Do they not look at the Camels, how they are made

Camels

A camel through the eye of a needle: a picture of the impossible.

7:40 Al-A'raf

To those who reject Our signs and treat them with arrogance, no opening will there be of the gates of heaven, nor will they enter the garden, until the camel can pass through the eye of the needle: Such is Our reward for those in sin

Yellow camels

The sparks of Hell compared to the tawny camels of Arabia.

77:33 Al-Mursalat

22:27 Al-Hajj

And proclaim the Pilgrimage among men: they will come to thee on foot and (mounted) on every kind of camel, lean on account of journeys through deep and distant mountain highways

The desert

Mirage

The deeds of disbelievers compared to the most familiar disappointment of desert travel.

24:39 An-Nur

But the Unbelievers,- their deeds are like a mirage in sandy deserts, which the man parched with thirst mistakes for water; until when he comes up to it, he finds it to be nothing: But he finds Allah (ever) with him, and Allah will pay him his account: and Allah is swift in taking account

The scorching hot wind
52:27 At-Tur

But Allah has been good to us, and has delivered us from the Penalty of the Scorching Wind

Shade and burning heat

The Arabs called it, hopefully, “the place of success”.

3:188 Aal Imran

Think not that those who exult in what they have brought about, and love to be praised for what they have not done,- think escape the penalty. For them is a penalty Grievous indeed

83:3 Al-Mutaffifin

O ye who believe! When ye deal with each other, in transactions involving future obligations in a fixed period of time, reduce them to writing Let a scribe write down faithfully as between the parties: let not the scribe refuse to write: as Allah Has taught him, so let him write. Let him who incurs the liability dictate, but let him fear His Lord Allah, and not diminish aught of what he owes. If they party liable is mentally deficient, or weak, or unable Himself to dictate, Let his guardian dictate faithfully, and get two witnesses, out of your own men, and if there are not two men, then a man and two women, such as ye choose, for witnesses, so that if one of them errs, the other can remind her. The witnesses should not refuse when they are called on (For evidence). Disdain not to reduce to writing (your contract) for a future period, whether it be small or big: it is juster in the sight of Allah, More suitable as evidence, and more convenient to prevent doubts among yourselves but if it be a transaction which ye carry out on the spot among yourselves, there is no blame on you if ye reduce it not to writing. But take witness whenever ye make a commercial contract; and let neither scribe nor witness suffer harm. If ye do (such harm), it would be wickedness in you. So fear Allah; For it is Good that teaches you. And Allah is well acquainted with all things. If ye are on a journey, and cannot find a scribe, a pledge with possession (may serve the purpose). And if one of you deposits a thing on trust with another, let the trustee (faithfully) discharge his trust, and let him Fear his Lord conceal not evidence; for whoever conceals it, - his heart is tainted with sin. And Allah knoweth all that ye do

Trade and amusement

A caravan arrived during the Friday sermon and people rushed to it.

62:11 Al-Jumu'ah

But when they see some bargain or some amusement, they disperse headlong to it, and leave thee standing. Say: "The (blessing) from the Presence of Allah is better than any amusement or bargain! and Allah is the Best to provide (for all needs)

Customs before Islam

The girl buried alive

For what sin was she killed?

81:8 At-Takwir

When the female (infant), buried alive, is questioned

For what crime she was killed

Animals set free in the names of idols

Camels and sheep set free and dedicated to idols according to how many young they had borne; the Qur’an rejects all four by name.

5:103 Al-Ma'idah

It was not Allah who instituted (superstitions like those of) a slit-ear she-camel, or a she-camel let loose for free pasture, or idol sacrifices for twin-births in animals, or stallion-camels freed from work: It is blasphemers who invent a lie against Allah; but most of them lack wisdom

Postponing the sacred months

To permit fighting; the Qur’an called it “an increase in disbelief”.

9:37 At-Tawbah

Verily the transposing (of a prohibited month) is an addition to Unbelief: the Unbelievers are led to wrong thereby: for they make it lawful one year, and forbidden another year, in order to adjust the number of months forbidden by Allah and make such forbidden ones lawful. The evil of their course seems pleasing to them. But Allah guideth not those who reject Faith

Saying to one’s wife “you are like my mother’s back”

A form of pre-Islamic divorce.

58:2 Al-Mujadilah

If any men among you divorce their wives by Zihar (calling them mothers), they cannot be their mothers: None can be their mothers except those who gave them birth. And in fact they use words (both) iniquitous and false: but truly Allah is one that blots out (sins), and forgives (again and again)

Idol altars, divining arrows

Drawing arrows at idols to decide matters.

5:90 Al-Ma'idah

O ye who believe! Intoxicants and gambling, (dedication of) stones, and (divination by) arrows, are an abomination,- of Satan's handwork: eschew such (abomination), that ye may prosper

Entering houses from the back

In ihram some Arabs entered their homes from the back rather than the door.

2:189 Al-Baqarah

They ask thee concerning the New Moons. Say: They are but signs to mark fixed periods of time in (the affairs of) men, and for Pilgrimage. It is no virtue if ye enter your houses from the back: It is virtue if ye fear Allah. Enter houses through the proper doors: And fear Allah: That ye may prosper

Writing materials

Sheets of papyrus or parchment
6:7 Al-An'am

If We had sent unto thee a written (message) on parchment, so that they could touch it with their hands, the Unbelievers would have been sure to say: "This is nothing but obvious magic

An unrolled leather sheet

Fine leather for writing.

52:3 At-Tur

In a Scroll unfolded

A written scroll

Rolling up the sky like a scroll.

21:104 Al-Anbiya

The Day that We roll up the heavens like a scroll rolled up for books (completed),- even as We produced the first creation, so shall We produce a new one: a promise We have undertaken: truly shall We fulfil it

The reed pen

“He taught by the pen” was revealed to a largely unlettered people.

68:1 Al-Qalam

Nun. By the Pen and the (Record) which (men) write

96:4 Al-'Alaq

He Who taught (the use of) the pen

Words from other languages

Classical scholars discussed this openly; al-Suyuti wrote a whole book on it (al-Muhadhdhab fima waqa‘a fi al-Qur’an min al-mu‘arrab). Scholars such as al-Shafi'i and al-Tabari held that these words had already become fully Arabic. They show Arabia as a crossroads of trade between Persia, Abyssinia and Rome.

Fine silk, thick brocadePersian
18:31 Al-Kahf

For them will be Gardens of Eternity; beneath them rivers will flow; they will be adorned therein with bracelets of gold, and they will wear green garments of fine silk and heavy brocade: They will recline therein on raised thrones. How good the recompense! How beautiful a couch to recline on

Jugs with spoutsPersian

«sang» and «gil» (stone and clay).

105:4 Al-Fil

Striking them with stones of baked clay

A niche for a lampAbyssinian
24:35 An-Nur

Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The Parable of His Light is as if there were a Niche and within it a Lamp: the Lamp enclosed in Glass: the glass as it were a brilliant star: Lit from a blessed Tree, an Olive, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil is well-nigh luminous, though fire scarce touched it: Light upon Light! Allah doth guide whom He will to His Light: Allah doth set forth Parables for men: and Allah doth know all things

An accurate balanceGreek / Roman

Mujahid called it a Roman word.

17:35 Al-Isra

Give full measure when ye measure, and weigh with a balance that is straight: that is the most fitting and the most advantageous in the final determination

The highest garden of ParadisePersian, via Greek
18:107 Al-Kahf

As to those who believe and work righteous deeds, they have, for their entertainment, the Gardens of Paradise

As to the Righteous, they shall drink of a Cup (of Wine) mixed with Kafur

Words the Companions asked about

Some words were so rare or regional that even leading Companions did not know them; this is taken as evidence that the Qur’an includes words from different tribal dialects, not only that of Quraysh.

Fodder

‘Umar is reported to have said: fruit we know, but what is «abb»?

80:31 'Abasa

And fruits and fodder

One who originates

Ibn ‘Abbas learned its meaning from two Bedouins arguing over a well.

35:1 Fatir

Praise be to Allah, Who created (out of nothing) the heavens and the earth, Who made the angels, messengers with wings,- two, or three, or four (pairs): He adds to Creation as He pleases: for Allah has power over all things

Gradual reduction

‘Umar asked its meaning from the pulpit; an old man of Hudhayl said that in their dialect it means “gradual reduction” and recited a line of poetry as proof.

16:47 An-Nahl

Or that He may not call them to account by a process of slow wastage - for thy Lord is indeed full of kindness and mercy
