The names of Allah in the Qur'an: frequency, ayah endings and combinations.

«al-asmāʾu l-ḥusnā»

«Allah’s most beautiful names»7:180–8 Al-A'raf

The Qur’an itself says that Allah’s names are «al-asmāʾu l-ḥusnā» and commands calling on Him by them. This occurs in four places (7:180, 17:110, 20:8, 59:24).

The most beautiful names belong to Allah: so call on him by them; but shun such men as use profanity in his names: for what they do, they will soon be requited

The most beautiful names belong to Allah: so call on him by them; but shun such men as use profanity in his names: for what they do, they will soon be requited

The most beautiful names belong to Allah: so call on him by them; but shun such men as use profanity in his names: for what they do, they will soon be requited

Ayat al-Kursi2:255 Al-Baqarah

al-Ḥayy al-Qayyūm and al-ʿAliyy al-ʿAẓīm. The pair «al-ḥayyu l-qayyūm» occurs only three times in the Qur’an.

Allah! There is no god but He,-the Living, the Self-subsisting, Eternal. No slumber can seize Him nor sleep. His are all things in the heavens and on earth. Who is there can intercede in His presence except as He permitteth? He knoweth what (appeareth to His creatures as) before or after or behind them. Nor shall they compass aught of His knowledge except as He willeth. His Throne doth extend over the heavens and the earth, and He feeleth no fatigue in guarding and preserving them for He is the Most High, the Supreme (in glory)

The other two places of al-Ḥayy al-Qayyūm3:2–111 Aal Imran

Allah! There is no god but He,-the Living, the Self-Subsisting, Eternal

Allah! There is no god but He,-the Living, the Self-Subsisting, Eternal

The close of Surah Al-Hashr59:22–24 Al-Hashr

The most names in one place: more than fifteen in three ayaat.

He is the First and the Last, the Evident and the Immanent: and He has full knowledge of all things

Surah Al-Ikhlas112:1–4 Al-Ikhlas

All names: counts and pairs

“Total occurrences” counts every use of the word; many words also have other meanings (e.g. «ʿazīz» for the ruler of Egypt, «ʿalīm» for Yusuf, «karīm» for the Qur’an and a messenger), so the “Usage” column shows how to read the count. At the end of an ayah the word is almost always an attribute of Allah. The pairs are explained on the Divine names at the ends of ayaat page.

Notes

The ninety-nine names

The hadith mentions ninety-nine names of Allah (Bukhari and Muslim), but the Qur’an gives no single list, and the well-known lists were compiled by scholars, some names being derived from Qur’anic verbs. Only names and attributes that occur in the Qur’an as nouns are included here.

Most frequent

The name «Allah» occurs 2,699 times (and «Allāhumma» 5 times), «Rabb» 975 times (mostly for Allah), and «ar-Raḥmān» 57 times, always for Allah. Among the attributes «ʿalīm» occurs most, and the most common pair at the end of ayaat is «ghafūrun raḥīm».
