Oaths in the Qur’an: what Allah swears by, and why

23 surahs that open with an oath, the seven «lā uqsimu» oaths, oaths within surahs, oaths by the Lord, and oaths of people: each with its answer, full Arabic text and translation.

Every oath in the Qur'an: what is sworn by, and the statement each oath leads to.

What is an oath?

The Arabs swore oaths to stress a statement and make it certain. The Qur’an adopts this style, but Allah’s oaths are by His creations: the sun, the night, the dawn, the pen, the human soul. Every oath has three parts:

adātu l-qasamThe oath particle: wa (wal-ʿaṣr), bi (uqsimu bi…), ta (tallāhi)
al-muqsamu bihiWhat is sworn by: the sun, time, the Qur’an…
jawābu l-qasamThe statement the oath affirms: the real message

Example: Surah Al-'Asr

By (the Token of) Time (through the ages) (1) Verily Man is in loss (2) Except such as have Faith, and do righteous deeds, and (join together) in the mutual teaching of Truth, and of Patience and Constancy (3)

«wal-ʿaṣr» is the oath, “time” is what is sworn by, and “man is in loss” is the answer.

Why does Allah swear by His creations?

According to the commentators (especially Ibn al-Qayyim in «at-Tibyān fī Aqsām al-Qur’ān»): (1) to draw attention to what is sworn by as a sign of Allah; (2) to show its greatness and importance; (3) to link the oath and its answer: for example, time and man’s loss, because time is a person’s life.

For people the rule is different: the Prophet ﷺ said, “Whoever swears, let him swear by Allah or keep silent” (Bukhari and Muslim). Allah may swear by His creation; His servant swears only by Allah.

The meaning of «lā uqsimu»

Literally “I do not swear”, but the meaning is “I swear”. Scholars hold three main views: (1) «lā» is for emphasis; (2) «lā» rejects the deniers’ claim: “No! I swear…”; (3) the matter is so clear that no oath is needed, and yet an oath is sworn.

The unstated answer

Sometimes the answer is not stated in words but understood from context (as in Qaf, An-Nazi'at, Al-Qiyamah, Al-Fajr). In Arabic this is eloquence: the listener completes it, and its sense is usually “you will surely be raised again”.

Oaths within surahs

74:32–34 Al-MuddaththirThe moon, the night and the dawn

An oath after «kallā»: Hell is one of the greatest things.

Nay, verily: By the Moon (32) And by the Night as it retreateth (33) And by the Dawn as it shineth forth (34)

Answer to the oath 74:35 Al-Muddaththir

This is but one of the mighty (portents)

86:11–12 At-TariqThe returning sky and the splitting earth

The sky that returns rain and the earth that splits with plants: this (Qur’an) is a decisive word.

By the Firmament which returns (in its round) (11) And by the Earth which opens out (for the gushing of springs or the sprouting of vegetation) (12)

Answer to the oath 86:13 At-Tariq

Behold this is the Word that distinguishes (Good from Evil)

51:7 Adh-DhariyatThe sky with its pathways

You are in differing opinions.

By the Sky with (its) numerous Paths

Answer to the oath 51:8 Adh-Dhariyat

Truly ye are in a doctrine discordant

51:23 Adh-DhariyatLord of the heavens and the earth

The answer is in the same ayah: it is as true as the fact that you speak.

Then, by the Lord of heaven and earth, this is the very Truth, as much as the fact that ye can speak intelligently to each other

The oath by the Lord, and by the Prophet’s life ﷺ

In three places Allah commanded the Prophet ﷺ to swear by his Lord (10:53, 34:3, 64:7), as Ibn Kathir noted. And «laʿamruka» is the only oath in the Qur’an by a human being’s life.

4:65 An-Nisa

No faith until they make you the judge.

But no, by the Lord, they can have no (real) Faith, until they make thee judge in all disputes between them, and find in their souls no resistance against Thy decisions, but accept them with the fullest conviction

15:92–93 Al-Hijr

We will surely question them all.

Therefore, by the Lord, We will, of a surety, call them to account (92) For all their deeds (93)

19:68 Maryam

We will surely gather them and the devils.

So, by thy Lord, without doubt, We shall gather them together, and (also) the Evil Ones (with them); then shall We bring them forth on their knees round about Hell

The Prophet ﷺ commanded to swear (1).

They seek to be informed by thee: "Is that true?" Say: "Aye! by my Lord! it is the very truth! and ye cannot frustrate it

The Prophet ﷺ commanded to swear (2): the Hour will surely come.

The Unbelievers say, "Never to us will come the Hour": Say, "Nay! but most surely, by my Lord, it will come upon you;- by Him Who knows the unseen,- from Whom is not hidden the least little atom in the heavens or on earth: Nor is there anything less than that, or greater, but is in the Record Perspicuous

The Prophet ﷺ commanded to swear (3): you will surely be raised.

The Unbelievers think that they will not be raised up (for Judgment). Say: "Yea, By my Lord, Ye shall surely be raised up: then shall ye be told (the truth) of all that ye did. And that is easy for Allah

15:72 Al-Hijr

The only oath in the Qur’an by a human life: the Prophet’s life ﷺ.

Verily, by thy life (O Prophet), in their wild intoxication, they wander in distraction, to and fro

Oaths of people (and of Iblis)

«tallāhi» occurs 9 times: twice as Allah’s own oath (16:56, 16:63), and otherwise from prophets, Yusuf’s brothers, the people of Paradise and the people of Hell. Also Iblis’s oath and examples of the oaths of disbelievers and hypocrites.

16:56 An-Nahlتَاللَّهِ: “by Allah”

Allah’s own oath: you will surely be questioned.

And they (even) assign, to things they do not know, a portion out of that which We have bestowed for their sustenance! By Allah, ye shall certainly be called to account for your false inventions

16:63 An-Nahl

Allah’s own oath: We sent messengers to nations before you.

By Allah, We (also) sent (Our messengers) to Peoples before thee; but Satan made, (to the wicked), their own acts seem alluring: He is also their patron today, but they shall have a most grievous penalty

21:57 Al-Anbiya

Ibrahim: I will surely plan against your idols.

And by Allah, I have a plan for your idols - after ye go away and turn your backs

12:73 Yusuf

Yusuf’s brothers: we did not come to cause corruption.

(The brothers) said: "By Allah! well ye know that we came not to make mischief in the land, and we are no thieves

12:85 Yusuf

The brothers, to Ya'qub: you will waste away remembering Yusuf.

They said: "By Allah! (never) wilt thou cease to remember Joseph until thou reach the last extremity of illness, or until thou die

12:91 Yusuf

The brothers, to Yusuf: Allah has preferred you over us.

They said: "By Allah! indeed has Allah preferred thee above us, and we certainly have been guilty of sin

12:95 Yusuf

The family, to Ya'qub: you are in your old error.

They said: "By Allah! truly thou art in thine old wandering mind

26:97 Ash-Shu'ara

The misguided in Hell: we were in clear error.

By Allah, we were truly in an error manifest

37:56 As-Saffat

A dweller of Paradise to his companion in Hell: you nearly ruined me.

He said: "By Allah! thou wast little short of bringing me to perdition

38:82–83 Sad

Iblis’s oath: by Your might, I will mislead them all, except Your sincere servants.

(Iblis) said: "Then, by Thy power, I will put them all in the wrong (82) Except Thy Servants amongst them, sincere and purified (by Thy Grace) (83)

The disbelievers’ solemn oaths that they would believe if a sign came.

They swear their strongest oaths by Allah, that if a (special) sign came to them, by it they would believe. Say: "Certainly (all) signs are in the power of Allah: but what will make you (Muslims) realise that (even) if (special) signs came, they will not believe

The hypocrites’ oaths to please the Muslims.

To you they swear by Allah. In order to please you: But it is more fitting that they should please Allah and His Messenger, if they are Believers
